Chairperson of State Human Rights Commission Justice B. Subhashan Reddy is likely to give his verdict in a day or two on the petitions filed by NGOs seeking a ban on reality TV shows featuring dances by children.A few more NGOs petitioned the SHRC on the issue on Tuesday. The SHRC had taken a serious view of the reality shows and warned that it would stop such programmes for violating children's rights.Meanwhile, the Mamidipudi Venkatarangaiya Foundation has urged the SHRC to issue suitable guidelines to the government to evolve rules for monitoring the content and production processes of children's participation in TV shows. In a representation to the commission's chairperson, the Foundation's national convenor, R. Venkat Reddy, also urged SHRC to issue an order withdrawing all such shows until the rules were evolved.Seeking to draw the attention of the SHRC to the numerous TV shows which grossly violate children's rights and their dignity, he said the need to keep viewers engaged in these shows with the prime focus being commercial gains had led to anchors, judges and participants indulging in theatrics. “It has sunk to a low level of loss of culture, smacking of paedophilia in the audience response with display of children -- young girls and boys -- as sexist objects. These shows totally demean children's dignity and freedom”, he added.
Tremendous impact:He said the judges' adverse comments during the shows would be harmful and the negative psychological impact of such shows was tremendous. Mr. Venkat Reddy said children participating in such shows need to be treated with respect.
